In 2008 I was a finalist at the ArtEZ Composition Contest in Enschede. The Millennium Jazz Orchestra played my piece “La Roya”. Wonderful experience, also meeting Frank Vaganée and the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, whose recordings I listened to a lot because of my teacher Bert Joris. Seven years later I met Joost Van Schaik again – who was the drummer for that night – at the Langnau Jazz Nights playing with Tineke Postma. He also played on one of my favorite records by the BJO called “Meeting Colours” feat. Philip Catherine. Assuming that he won’t even remember that gig, Joost surprised me when he said “Sure!” and started to sing the beginning of my tune… Well, that left me speechless! Should probably go back writing these hits for big band…
